Introduction

As is true of many things in the course of human history, it came out of Africa. They tried to keep it there. They were mostly successful. (For a while.) As is true of most things in the course of human history, Mother Nature prevailed despite the whims and actions of the creatures upon the Earth.

Chapter 1

January 1, 2043

The television droned on across the room, the same updates playing repeatedly. We have two channels now, but they both show the same thing during the daytime when everyone is busy. It's mostly the same news updates and public service announcements that have been playing for the last week, the last month. We're supposed to stay tuned in in case something important happens, but there isn't much of anything new on the news. I guess it gives people a sense of staying connected in a world where there isn't much connection left between people anymore.

It's not that people  don't want to connect anymore, it's just that the pockets of survivors are spread apart and fearful of strangers. Then again, that's probably why they did survive, or why their parents or grandparents did, anyhow. You can't blame them for being afraid, because they did everything right, and it still happened. They did their research, they wore protective gear, and most people observed the recommended quarantines. They tried travel restrictions for a while, then most governments started to enforce quarantines, not merely recommend them, and they imposed complete travel bans. They tried to create a cure, tried to trick the virus into going dormant. Like the old margarine commercial said, you can't fool Mother Nature. It turns out, you can't fight her, either, not even with the most sophisticated weapons and science known to man.
