Jozy-Jo Whaddya Know

JoJo opens every door he comes across.

Ten months and on the go, it is just what he's doing right now, but it is currently exhausting me. I am using rubber bands, random strings and twist ties to keep him out. I sit on the toilet so he doesn't go fishing when I'm in there. I can't even count how many times today I've just leaned against the refrigerator to deter him.

Finally, in desperation, I tilted his mischievous little cherub cheeks towards mine and said,"Jozy-Jo whatdoyaknow? You can't open every door."   He responded in his usual manner, exposing his new pearlies and addictive dimples in an ear to ear grin.

And then, I experienced an epihany of sorts.   What in the world did I just tell my child, that he accepted without question because he doesn't have the experience or knowledge to argue against?

I told him he couldn't open every door for crying out loud.   I don't even have the vocabulary to adequately express how sad that statement made me after I thought it through. How utterly unfair it is that some kids aren't allowed to open every door available to them, through no fault of their own,  just because some random fool told them they couldn't.

Well , I think  I've just talked my self into letting Jo-Jo open every damn door in the house 'til he gets used to the idea of seizing all of the wonderful opportunities before him.

Except for the toilet, he's just gonna hafta fish somewhere else.
