Just The Beginning

Chapter One

Today could have been one of the most terrible and life-changing moments in my life. It was June 21, 1940 (WWII). I had been waiting in the hospital for hours now. Dad had died a year ago when the war started. Now I am waiting in the waiting room for Mom hoping the doctors can help.

My mom, Mary Williams, had been sick for many months now, but the doctors could not figure out what it was. Luckily, we were blessed with enough money to get her the care she needed, but in the end it seemed to only help her hold on a little bit longer.

I wait now in a scary hospital hoping for the best.

When the doctor comes I jump up hoping he has good news. He has his head hung low. “Abigail Williams,” He begins. “Your mom was not able to make it. Since you are twelve, you cannot live on your own. We have a letter from your mom to give to you. She said to not open it until you are on the train. It will take you from here in London to Colmar, France. There a relative will find you. There is an officer at the front desk who will take you to the train. You can go to your house and pick up a few sentimental things.”

I nod at the information he has just given me. I walk over to the front desk and find the man who will take me where I need to go. The man drove me to my house. There I picked up a rose necklace that Mom gave me. That was the only thing that I really wanted other than her.

As I was walking back to the car I couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t crying, but I guess it was because I knew inside that this would one day happen. The one thing I hated was that I was one of the few twelve year olds that this would ever happen to. I didn't understand why this was happening and I just wanted things to go back to normal.

When the train started to leave and I was sat down by myself, It really started to hit me. Tears started rolling down my cheeks. I really didn’t understand why this happened. Mom was young and had always been in perfect heath. The tears just kept coming until I couldn't cry anymore. I just leaned up against the window and layed there silent.

I remembered the note that Mom gave me. I opened the sealed letter. It said,

Dear, Abigail

I love you very much. Just know that. There are many things you will not understand and I am not the one to tell you. You will live with your Grandma Elise. She is very kind and will take care of you. The rose necklace, I know you took that. Keep it safe. It will always keep you safe and never hide it. I want you to do well in life and to keep going. Do not let my passing affect your life in a bad way. I love you so much no matter what you hear or find out. And one more thing

The letter stopped there. She must not have had the chance to finish. This letter did make me feel better. I touched my rose necklace and somehow knew everything would be okay.

I still wait a very long time unable to do anything. We make another stop and a young lady walks into where I am. She seems to be in her early twenties. She is dressed rather odd though. She is wearing all black and it is skin tight. I look at my attire and I am wearing a red dress. She has short dirty blonde hair.

“Excuse me,” she says. “My name is Lilith. I know that this part of the train is private, but do you mind if I come in here with you?” “That’s okay. You can come in,” I say. “You are very pretty,” Lilith says. “I love your dark brown hair and green eyes.”

“Thank you,” I respond. “I am Abigail by the way.” “Well Abigail, where are you headed to?” Lilith asks. “I am going to Colmar,” I answer. “My grandma lives there.”

“There is one thing you should know Abigail,” Lilith says. She lets the statement hang in the air as I cock my head. She starts to speak again. “I wouldn't trust strangers in black. They always have some kind of plan to hurt innocent people.” I didn't know what to do after she said that. I knew that she was going to do something bad. I really hoped she would go away.

“I think you should leave,” I manage to say. By this point I am shaking with fear. We are in the middle of a forest and nowhere to go. Lilith gets up and walks away. She turns around and looks at me one last time. She smiles and goes her way. As soon as she is out of sight the train stops moving. I go to open the door to get out, but it is locked.

I looked at the window and opened it. I climbed out of it and didn't see anyone, so I ran. I just ran forward. At first I was fine, but then balls of green electricity came at me. I didn't even know that was possible. I hold my hands out as a defense even though I know it won’t do anything, but then the electricity starts going back towards the way it came. I look at my hands in surprise and start running again. The more scared I get that someone is following me, the faster I go. Then more balls of green electricity keep coming towards me.

I keep holding out my hands like I did earlier and the balls of electricity go back the way they came. I keep running. I am so confused on how this is even possible, but I’m glad I’ve found a way to protect myself. I am starting to lose my breath and it worries me. I know once I stop I’ll never be able to start running again. I keep running through the vast forest.

Every so often the balls of electricity come at me. I continue to block it like I’ve done only moments before. Now I have ran very far and the balls of electricity have stopped and I see a cave in the distance. The sky is beginning to darken and I know I need to rest. I continue to run towards it.

When I go into the cave I see that it is small and empty, but it is also safe. I go to the end of it and lay down. I drift off to sleep and hope for better.

The next morning I wake up, but I am not in the cave I fell asleep in. I sit up and see I am on a beach. No one is here. I look behind me and there is a huge mountain. I look to my left and see nothing but sea and sand. I look forward and I see nothing but ocean. Finally I look to my left and in the distance I see a very tall building.
