The Roosters scored six tries to the Cowboys' three, with only a lack of finesse in finishing costing the Cowboys.

Roosters half-back Brett Finch impressed with a wonderful kicking game and two tries, while winger Todd Byrne also crossed for a double.

Half-back Nathan Fien was among the Cowboys' best, creating numerous opportunities in attack.First pointsJosh Hannay had the chance to put the Cowboys in front in the opening minutes but missed a penalty kick from 30 metres out.

However the visitors did not have to wait long to post their first points with Brenton Bowen crossing for a try in the 10th minute.

Bowen, following up a lovely little grubber from half-back Nathan Fien, shot around the outside and dived on the ball.

Hannah made no mistake this time and the conversion saw the Cowboys grab a 6-0 lead.

The Roosters wasted no time with their reply and quick hands to the left saw Todd Byrne crash over in the corner.

Chris Walker failed to add the extras and the Roosters trailed 6-4.

The Cowboys steadied and some magic from Fien saw them in for their second four-pointer.

The half-back put up a towering bomb and, with the Roosters slow to react, regathered to score a fantastic solo try.

Anthony Topou proved impossible to stop from only metres out and crossed next to the posts. A simply conversion to Walkers saw the Roosters claw back to within two points.

The Roosters finally hit the front in the 29th minute when a lovely inside ball from Luke Dorn found Stuart Webb, who angled run was enough to get past the Cowboys' defence.

Walker added the extras to give the Roosters a 16-12 lead.

The momentum may have been with the Roosters but the Cowboys were no about to let the ladder leaders skip away.

And the Cowboys' commitment was rewarded with a 18-16 half-time lead when Aaron Payne crossed for a converted try in the 40th minute.

The Roosters began the second half in the best possible fashion with Finch crossing for the softest of tries.

Finch, close to the line, stepped of his left foot and ducked in between a couple of defenders to score. Walker missed the kick and the Roosters' lead remained two points.

Hannay put the Cowboys back in front with penalty goals in the 48th and 54th minutes.

But it was the Roosters who were making the most of their attacking raids a lovely cross run from Shannon Hegarty set up another try.

Hegarty drew a supporting Webb, who offloaded to a flying Byrne and the winger crossed in the left-hand corner.

Walker converted the difficult chance from the sideline to give the Roosters a four-point lead with 16 minutes left in the match.

A late try to Finch, his second of the night, put the game out of the Cowboys' reach.
