Chapter 1

Officer John Daniels walks into “Jim’s Dinner” sits at his favorite booth in the joint facing south with a big window behind him reflecting the perfect amount of sunlight for him to enjoy his morning paper. Just then Patty, Jim’s wife and head waitresses of the dinner comes to Johns booth and with a warm smile said “ Good morning John how are you sweetheart and Happy birthday”. “I’m fine Patty, where’s the newspaper and don’t even try to hide it from me i know what’s on the front page”. “Here’s the paper and do you want the Jenny Special with Orange Juice”. “Yes i would, now please hand me the newspaper”. John takes the paper and for 2 minuets stares at the cover of the paper with out a blink, he then sighs and begins to read the newspaper. Patty finally brings him his food and takes the paper from out of his hands, and before he even try’s to open his mouth to speak she’s out of earshot and simply says “eat your breakfast before it gets cold”. He just smirks and says under his breath “Ok Patty you’re right”. John looks down at the table to see the “Jenny Special”, 3 scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese, 3 beef sausages, 4 strips of bacon, home fries and a order of 3 blueberry pancakes. It took him a good while but like the champ he is John finished and only had room for the tall glass of OJ that Patty delivered to the table. He downed it and said “check please”. “Already covered by Stu”. John looks towards the counter and sitting there is Captain Stu Bennet, He simply tips his hat and go back to his breakfast. John just smiled and said “I’ll be back later for lunch”. As he’s walking to his squad car John is stopped dead in his tracks seeing a beautiful blonde haired blue eyed women wearing a red blouse and  boot cut jeans. “ No it can’t be” he rubs his eyes and she vanished.

John then gets in his car and starts on his way to the station. He drives around town for a while with the windows open to get fresh air while he’s cruzing towards the station. Once in the station all his colleagues were trying to corner him and be extra careful with there words. After tying up a few lose ends around the station, John gets ready to go back out on patrol. He gets called into the Captains office, “forget it Stu today’s a regular day and damnit I’m not gonna even entertain the idea of riding desk” he then turns on his heel and starts to walk out of the captains office. Stu cuts him off by saying “Come on John I’ve got your birthday present” Stu hands him a box and John opens it. It’s a detective badge. “Before you say anything, it’s been a long time coming I’ve been meaning to do this for a while but we both know why i wasn’t able to”. John switches out his badges while saying “Yea i know thank you Cap”.

John went out on patrol going around town, responding to a few calls about disturbing the peace and other minor offenses. He stopped back at Jim’s for a quick lunch of a Cheeseburger with cooked onions and onion rings with a Pepsi. As he gets up to pay the check. Patty is walking over “it’s on the house detective, because it’s your birthday”. “Happy birthday old man” Jim shouts from the kitchen. Thank you I’ll be back for dinner. He goes outside gets in his car, turns it on as he’s about to put it in reverse, he hears a knock on the window. He turns and sees the woman from this morning and in her arms is a baby blanket and as she lowers it to his window he sees that there is no baby in it. He blinks and she is gone, he jumps out of his cruiser and goes into the road and looks both ways searching for her. He realizes it was his imagination and goes back into his cruiser and pulls away.

As he’s going back deeper into town, he gets a phone call from Captain. Bennet telling him he’s relieved for the day and to go home and enjoy the rest of his birthday and he hangs up on him. He goes by the station and Cap sees him and tries to put on his best stern voice and say “ didn’t i tell u to go home”. “Yes Cap but i need some stuff from my desk”. “Fine hurry up and go home”. He gets his stuff and leaves for the day. He goes home, opens the door walks into the kitchen and takes a drink of gin and walks into his bedroom. Takes off his shoes and lays in the bed and turns on the tv. Within a few minutes, he’s asleep and starts to have a vivid dream. In this dream he’s sitting in “Jim’s Diner”. Waiting for his wife Jenny, she’s on her way to celebrate his birthday. As he is looking out the window from there favorite booth he’s sees 3 cop cars and two ambulances race by. Something told him to follow it so he got up and told Patty to tell Jenny he’ll be right back. He followed caught up to the cop cars and ambulances just as they arrived. He got out and walked over to his colleagues and asked what information they had. The explained how it was a two car accident reported by a passer byer. As they get closer time stood still as he immediately realized that one of the cars involved in the accident was the family pick up truck. He immediately raced over to the driver side window and found his wife Jenny with broken glass and cuts on her hands and face. Then the truck caught fire and he was desperately trying to get her out but the door was badly mangled so he got her out of the car just as it was beginning to be engulfed in flames and carried her out of harms way. It was when he put her and the gurney that he realized she was bleeding heavily from a wound on her abdomen and her breathing had become irregular. Her lung had collapsed from the impact of the airbag and her wound was from all the broken glass from the windshield. He begged the EMT’s to transport her to the hospital. The driver sped as fast as possible while the other EMT was doing his best to keep her alive until they arrived at the hospital. All the while John is clutching her hand and won’t let go, pleading with the lord not to take the love of his life on his birthday. But his prayers were for not as she died from her injuries as they were nearing the hospital. With her dying breath she handed him a sonogram and told him “I’m sorry and i love you” then the light in her ocean blue eyes went out. Just then he woke up in a panick and went around his house looking for his wife hoping it was just a dream. But he came back to the painful reality. This was supposed to be his 35 th birthday and he was supposed to be celebrating with his beautiful wife that he had loved since high school and his child. Now he’s alone in his house. He can’t help but be angry but his anger fades when he realizes that Jenny would not want him to live in anger and be the best he can be and carry on her name and spirit.

He goes out for his birthday dinner at, you guessed it “Jim’s”. He gets a nice juicy steak, baked potato and some baked macaroni and cheese. After wards he ate a slice of blueberry pie. Patty comes with a cup of coffee and says. “ i remember when Jenny first got you you to try the blueberry pie and now you’ve been hooked ever since. “ yep, check please or did someone cover it again”. John pays and walks outside and notices a woman coming towards him and she is clearly distressed. Her hair is all messed up and her clothes are ripped. She pleads “please help there was an accident just down the road”. He says “ok where is this accident” and he reaches into his car to radio dispatch. When he looks towards the woman and she has disappeared. He climbs into his car and speeds south so he can find this accident. He comes to find this one car accident and he calls for backup. He gets out and goes over to this white Chevy Imapla. And the first thing he sees is the woman who told him about the accident dead in the back seat, and a dead young man in the front. And next to the woman is a crying baby. He reaches into the car and is able to get the baby out before something bad can happen. When the ambulance arrives they check out the baby and place her in Johns care. He takes her to the hospital for further evaluations and the staff immediately recognizes her. Since it’s a small town he shares the circumstances with the staff and the staff let’s him know how it was just her and her parents and how they had just left the hospital and hadn’t even named her yet. Following protocol would take days and it was the weekend so the baby will be here for the weekend alone with the staff. John looked at this perfect angel and something in his heart would not let him leave her. So he stood with her and was even allowed to take her home when she was all cleared. He had her only for a month when her decided to legally adopt her because she had stolen a piece of his heart and he couldn’t let her go. He was standing in his kitchen feeding her a bottle when the door bell rang. He answered to his mother and father in law Dan and Beth. They were all smiles to see him and this beautiful girl. John immediately took advantage and with a smile handed her over to Beth and said “here grandma your turn” Beth was more than happy to oblige. “ so did you pick a name for this bundle of joy yet” says Beth. John just smiled and gave Dan a drink and they toasted and he said “I’ve been thinking about that” he takes a sip of his drink. “ how about Jenny” everyone smiles and agrees.
