the new age, the girl & the snake
i. there are dynamites in places where my lungs used to be, remember when we kissed and you borrowed the sun’s opulence? don’t flirt with me, don’t pull my hair / you say romance is dead and that tinder is the new satellite for lovers with burning bodies all snuffed in the daylight.
ii. i came home last night to an empty bed and my roommate passed out on the couch / sometimes bruises appear on her skin like ghosts & whenever i ask her about them she tells me about how immortality comes at a price, how sometimes even gods ache wild as abandoned 3 am streets in the grave blue light of days dead and gone.
iii. when it snows i feel my soul leave my body, he comes back to me with those snake charming eyes but he does not see my reptilian scales, my forked tongue / we borrow our sonnets from shakespeare, put on a show, all glitter-caked and hallowed, but these stories always end in tragedies, don’t they?
smoldering, softly
he slides the glass towards me, asks me to pour all my sadness into it // “it’s too small,” i say, “it looks limited, but it’s infinite,” he insists // nights like this i’m gale instead of girl, i am tsunami tides and bloodied mouths, we’re sparking fires in each other’s throats and the war’s over but the fight’s just begun and this village is a platitude of lost creatures // i found him in a puddle of his own blood last night, i found him in shattered words tornfrayeddisrupted // the endless limelight of highway, your cold fingers running down my spine like moonwater; the earth’s muddy new tears // oh but sweet wild child, everything in this world breaks, my grandmother’s words echo into infinities // and you, the bane of my existence and me, a flower’s grave and us; a heated battle, hold me - i’ll curl up inside your rabbit hole, burrow softly in nuzzled dreamless sovereignty.
