Does an Average User Really Need a VPN?

Sometimes I feel like VPN networks are a bit overrated, but then I remember how often I connect to random public Wi-Fi or open links from friends without checking what kind of website it is. Most of the time, I'm just watching videos, browsing social media, or downloading something small, and it doesn't seem like a big deal. But still, sometimes I wonder: does the average person really need it in their daily life, or is it more of a “just in case” thing? And also — honestly, do you read the privacy policies for apps, or do you just scroll down to the “accept” button too?
