Working with remodeling contractors: what should homeowners watch out for?

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about starting a full remodel, but the part that worries me most is dealing with contractors. I’ve heard so many mixed stories from friends — some had great experiences, others ended up with delays, random extra costs, or just poor communication that made the whole thing stressful. For those who’ve already been through it, what should homeowners pay the most attention to before signing anything? I’d rather know ahead of time what I might be walking into.

From what I’ve seen helping my sister with her bathroom upgrade, communication really does make or break the experience. Even small misunderstandings can turn into delays or frustrations. It’s good you’re thinking about these things before starting — most people don’t, and then they feel overwhelmed once the project begins.
