Working with remodeling contractors: what should homeowners watch out for?

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about starting a full remodel, but the part that worries me most is dealing with contractors. I’ve heard so many mixed stories from friends — some had great experiences, others ended up with delays, random extra costs, or just poor communication that made the whole thing stressful. For those who’ve already been through it, what should homeowners pay the most attention to before signing anything? I’d rather know ahead of time what I might be walking into.

Great discussion! I went through a pretty stressful remodel last year, and one thing that really helped me vet contractors was digging into online reviews. Beyond just the star rating, reading the detailed experiences others shared gave me a sense of each contractor's communication style and reliability, which was a huge comfort. I actually found an article about benefits of online reviews that resonated with me. It’s not just about complaining, but about feeling empowered and making informed choices.
