Differences between high and low volatility games

Hey, can anyone explain the real differences between high volatility and low volatility slots? Last weekend I was messing around on some games after a long day at work, started with what I thought was a chill one, but it ate through my spins super quick without much happening, then suddenly bam, a decent hit. Made me wonder if I should've gone for the steadier types that pay out little bits more often to keep things going longer. What's your take on which feels better for casual play?

Lately I've seen way more slots leaning toward higher variance in the newer releases, probably because everyone chases those massive potential hits that get shared all over. It's funny how the base game on some feels almost dead half the time, just teasing you until a feature kicks in. Back in the day, it seemed like steadier payout machines were everywhere in the arcades I used to hit up as a kid, but now it's rare to find ones that drip wins constantly without some wild swing involved. Kinda changes how long you stick with a session.
