What should I look for when choosing an accountant?

I'm finally taking the plunge and getting some professional help with my taxes and small business accounting. I've been muddling through for years but it's honestly a huge stressor and I know I'm probably missing out on deductions. What are the key things I should be looking for in an accountant? Obviously qualifications and experience are important, but are there any other qualities or red flags I should be aware of when I start meeting with potential candidates?

It's a great idea to get professional help! I would definitely recommend finding someone with experience in dealing with businesses similar to yours because every sector has its quirks. When vetting options, if you're located in Washington state, perhaps consider Accountants in Skagit County - they may already have experience working with similar local businesses. Beyond the technical skills, look for someone who communicates clearly and is willing to explain things in a way you understand. After all, you want to feel comfortable asking them questions. Also, get a sense of their responsiveness – do they get back to you promptly, or do you have to chase them?
