Door 14

Welcome back to Reality

Today was the day no-one wanted to come. Not the normal day, where Billion gives out cigarettes in the canteen for free, or the day where Harlie scratches weird messsges on the wall with a sharp stone. It wasn't even the day where Zed acts all cocky in the corridors.

Today was the first day back at Farchester Boarding School.

I suppose everybody tried to forget what happened at the end of last term, but I guess a sixteen year old girl being murdered in the middle of the night at the school you practically live at wasn't the type  of thing you easily forget.

I wasn't doing anything in particular when I decided to get dressed. I climbed out of the bed and pulled on a jumper. Matilda was lying in bed, texting. Every inch of her were done up all perfectly. I had forgotten how people like her got up so early to spend hours on the way they looked.

Once I was dressed, I say in silence for a long while until the bell for breakfast went. Matilda left immediately, brushing through her glossy black hair. As she left, Alexa came through the door. Alexa's dark hair was soaked, but her big brown eyes overruled it.

"Bitch." Alexa said as Matilda pushed past her to join her so-called friends in the hallway. "What's her problem?"

"Where's Harlie?" I responded.

"She went to meet Stan in the canteen. Which is exactly where we are going right now."

Alexa dragged me to the canteen. It was quieter than usual, but there's no guessing why.

Sher and Harlie were sitting on the table where we always sit. The atmosphere, however, felt so wrong, so angry, almost...revengeful. The only noise was a low murmur in the air.

"What's going on?" Alexa whispered. "Do you think it's to do with..."

"Of course it is." Sher interrupted. Alexa could be pretty dim sometimes, as Sher could be fiesty. "Are you stupid of something?" Sher leaned back, biting into a hot cross bun.

I looked around. Everyone was here.

"They haven't found the killer yet, Laure." Harlie whispered, reading my thoughts. "And if they have, they clearly weren't from here."

Sher and Alexa quit their momentary argument and joined in our conversation.

"Even Zed and Bella are here. That really is something." Alex said, nodding her head towards the group of popular rich kids that very rarely made it to lessons in the centre.

"How the hell did they manage to keep together of summer?" Sher butted in.

"Ahem." Everyone was silent immediately. Mrs Crosby was standing in the the canteen, her stern face staring on is all.

"A year assembly will be held in Main Hall in ten minutes." With that, Mrs Crosby left, striding in her black high heels and pencil skirt. Hardly anybody said a word through the whole process, and it made me wonder that perhaps everybody had simply given up on trying or thinking or questioning anything.

Relcuntnly, our year dragged ourselves to the assembly.

A policeman stood in former of us. Police were here all the time, but at the front in assembly?

"I'm sure your all wondering why I'm here" he says bluntly. Well at least he was a genius in pointing out the obvious.

"I'm here because of 14." He said.
