Chapter 1

“The Humpy” is made almost entirely of trees and shrubs, plus corrugated iron to the smaller part of the exterior walls along with the roof. A lot with materials were either reclaimed and also second-hand, including the wood floorboards, roofing iron and all windows and doors. We also lucked out and about and stumbled upon an excessive amount of plywood from a industrial building project, which we used for your interior. Using the original posts as a starting point meant that everything was a lttle bit out of square, and each plywood panel were required to meet perfectly, barely a millimeter tolerance, so hand-cutting all of them was incredibly time-consuming. But is was significant – now that it’s been limewashed and also the floor, it’s quite wonderful and very cozy.

The most important find in terms in the design was the screen set, bought online coming from a renovated building site. These colonial timber shape windows gave us time to make a space that was a mix of openness to nature and enclosure, somewhere domestic and familiar. I had at first planned on doing the particular typical modern thing along with big panels of floor-to-ceiling glass, giving no visual barrier between yourself as well as nature surrounding you. On the other hand, once I saw these kinds of windows, I knew they could be used so as to give ample transparency towards outside, but with the built-in character than a place of retreat along with contemplation needs. After almost all, we don’t spend the whole time staring out on the view, but often live with our heads in the book, or spend time cooking supper or drinking tea and sitting about the floor with our child. The space needed the comfort on the familiar.
