Hire A Handyman Or Hire A Licensed Contractor

Maybe you're in the middle of a sales transaction, and the buyer is asking you to repair the leak in the bathroom. Or maybe you're just the responsible homeowner, and you want to get that leak addressed. So what do you do? Do you hire a handyman? Or do you hire a licensed contractor? In my opinion, it depends. It depends on the complexity of the project, the price of the project, and many other factors.

Let's start with the handyman. By far the majority of the time this is going to be your cheapest option to which you're probably going for all the time. There are still many reasons why you would want to consider hiring a licensed, bonded, and insured contractor.

There are many reasons, but I'm just going to mention one, which is your ability to be compensated if things don't work out. For example, let's say you decide to fix that leak in the bathroom, and you hire Mr. handyman, and he comes in, and he comes in with his helper Alex. They get started, and everything is going well until a pipe burst in the bathroom; it gushes all over the place causing all sorts of water damage. And then, to make things worse, Alex slips and falls and breaks his arm. And to make things just even more entertaining, you happen to live in a condominium complex, and the water damage extends to the unit below.

You turn over to Mr. handyman, and yes, he's sad, and he's disappointed, and you wish things would have turned out differently. But he also tells you that he doesn't have any money to cover the damages and he's not insured. He disappears. You try to track him down. He disconnects his number, you go to his address, it's a P.O box, and meanwhile, you still have Alex over here screaming and aching talking about he's going to sue you to cover his medical expenses. What was supposed to be a 200 rand savings by hiring a handyman has just turned into a maybe 10,000 rands expense, which you are now personally liable for.

Now let's run this scenario using a licensed bonded and insured contractor. For one there's a license something is certifying their ability to be able to do the work with minimal mistakes. And let's not forget about Alex. Now there's workers' compensation insurance to help them take care of that broken arm.

Further, most contractors will have general liability insurance; you might want to ask for a copy of their certificate before hiring them to do the job. But again, that is in place to help you cover the damages in your unit and the unit below. And as far as cooperation and a contractor is fleeing or disappearing, they are controlled and are regulated by the contractors' licensing board, which is in place to help consumers; at the same time, it's a place you can go to file a complaint or to help them get you or to ask them to help you get cooperation from the contractor.

In summary, when you hire a handyman in cape town or anywhere else, it will save that money. Now if the scope of work is more complex, the risk for collateral damage is higher maybe yes, it's a simple faucet installation, but it's a 25,000 rands bathroom renovation; you probably want to go with a licensed bonded and insured contractor. Protect yourself against possible damages and get Alex off your back. So what do you guys think? Hire a handyman or hire a licensed contractor? Let us know in the comments section below.
