Chapter 1

"I'm telling you, you're just paranoid. There is no one following us."

"You can't prove that!" Charlie weaved around the other cars on the highway.

"No, I can't," Sarah held on for dear life. "But you can't prove that they are either. I'm going to try the radio again. Maybe we can pick up a station now and it will calm you down."

She pushed a button on the dash board and the radio lit up but only static came from the speakers. Sarah pushed another button that was supposed to seek out the nearest station but the call numbers only flashed by without stopping.

"You'd think we would find something! We're not that far out in the boonies," Sarah pushed the power button again and sat back as the radio went dark. "Let's find a place to stay for the night and maybe by morning you'll be less paranoid."

"I'm not paranoid!" Charlie growled, "But I am tired enough that I agree we should stop."

Charlie parked outside of a run-down motel and told Sarah to stay in the car so of course she followed him into the office.

Inside they found the night manager arguing with another guest over the phone. "I don't know what to tell you. All the TVs and radios seem to be out... Have you tried sleeping without a radio?.... Do you have an Ipod?.... Then sir, unless I come down and sing to you all night there isn't anything I can do!"

He shoved the phone back into its cradle and looked up at Charlie and Sarah with a smile. “How may I help you folks this evening?”

"Is it normal for the radios to be out?" Charlie's voice cracked with fear.

"Nope, I've never experienced anything like it before," the manager was getting a set of keys for the couple as he talked. "I had to turn off the weather radio too. Seemed like no matter what station I tuned it to it just wanted to be staticky with a name being whispered every so often."

"A name?" Sarah watched as Charlie signed the guest register.

"Yep, " the manager turned the book around and his eyes grew larger as he read Charlie's signature. Without another word he turned the radio on. At first they heard only static, but then, there it was. A man's voice whispering, "Charlie."
