Is a PIM system worth the investment for a small business?
We're a small online retailer, and I'm wondering if a PIM system is overkill for our size. We only have about 200 products, but managing all the descriptions, images, and specs across our website and marketplaces is taking up a lot of time. I just can't decide if the cost of implementing and maintaining a PIM is worth it for the time savings. Is anyone else running a small business and using a PIM? Or should I just stick with well-organized spreadsheets for now?
I don't think 200 products automatically makes a PIM overkill. The bigger question is how much time you're spending maintaining product data and how many channels you need to keep synchronized. If you're already updating descriptions, images, and specifications in several places, a PIM could easily pay for itself in saved time and fewer mistakes.
That said, I'd probably start with a well-structured spreadsheet if your catalog is stable and the number of sales channels is still manageable. You can always move to a PIM later when the manual process becomes a real bottleneck. The key is to structure the spreadsheet like a proper master product database from day one, so migrating later isn't painful.
